あらすじ:越中の立山を訪れた旅の僧は
どこからともなく現れた老人と出会う。
老人は衣の袖をちぎって、陸奥の国に住む妻子に渡してほしいと言って消え去る。
僧が陸奥の国の妻子にそれを見せると、死んだ漁師の衣とぴったり合う。
跡を弔う僧の前に漁師の亡霊が現れる。
漁師は殺生をせざるをえない境遇に生まれ、そのうち殺生を楽しんでいた我が身の因果を嘆く。
ついで鳥を捕る様を物語る。
それが地獄では化鳥となった鳥が逆に漁師を責め立てるという苦しみの様を再現し、
救いのない地獄の業火を物語って、僧に助けを求めさけびながら消え失せる。
